About

I write about the things I notice.

For most of my adult life, I've tried to be a source of inspiration, help, and advice to others. Eventually I decided to own that role and be more intentional about it.

I started writing about my passions, my thoughts, and curious wonderings about our world. That has produced four books to date, each very different from the others but connected by a desire to offer perspective and encouragement.

I love my God and my family with all I've got. One awesome wife, two adult kids, and a four-legged golden girl named Betty is what that looks like. We call North Carolina home.

Thanks for being here. – Scott

These days

Walks, words, and a little less quiet.

A lot of The Words We're Given began on quiet walks near the water. Betty has since become a regular companion, which is wonderful for the company and slightly less wonderful for uninterrupted contemplation.

That is probably fitting. Most of life does not arrive in perfect silence anyway. The point is to notice what is there.

The thread

Be good to people.

It's so simple, it's black and white — that's what my friend, Kris, the founder of www.begoodtopeople.com, says about her brand that has become a guiding force for me. Do good, pay attention to people, offer encouragement. Don't leave your part undone.
